Harley Quinn: S2 Trailer & Interview With P. Schumacker (teaser)

The Harley Quinn animated show is a wild, funny yet emotional ride into the zanny world of Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (superbly voiced by Lake Bell) and of course a lovely cast of characters from the DC Comics Universe. It’s a surprisingly deep show, that despite being a comedy or satire, it manages to make a point for a variety of issues. From abusive relationships to environmentalism and of course: Politics.

Season 2 Trailer is out by the way and you can watch it here:

What definitely stuck with me is that it’s a fresh and dare I say realistic take on superheroes. It comes in contrast with the often exaggerated tone of comics by adding the human element back into the mix. And it does it in a show where blood, gore, guts and f-bombs are dropped constantly.

It’s an adult show but what makes it adult is that despite all the zaniness there’s an underlying drama, a humanistic seriousness that gives depth to the characters. Similar to Secret Six, it's easy to suspend your disbelief and look at it as a mirror of our lives.

So… I binged watched the show and it really resonated with me. I think this is the best version of Poison Ivy in every medium. And since our zine is all about the Green I asked co producer and writer Patrick Schumacker a few questions about Poison Ivy, the show and what the future holds. But here's a small teaser of what you will get. You can read the full interview on issue #2 of Vines N Roses zine. Issue #1 Available here: https://vinesnroses.blogspot.com/p/vines-n-roses-zine-issue-1.html

VinesNRoses: One of the defining aspects of the show is the fluidity of the jokes. The timing is perfect! I read at your AMA that this is thanks to the superb direction and editing as well as the excellent writing team. What is your fav joke/scene with Poison Ivy?

Patrick Schumacker: I’ll give you one that’s already aired, so as not to spoil anything, but my favorite Ivy scene of the first 13 episodes is probably the one in episode 108 when Lex Luthor runs into Harley and Ivy and the crew during their tour of the Legion of Doom HQ and Ivy calls them the Legion of Dildos, to which Luthor responds that that’s the name of a sex shop down the street with whom the Legion of Doom is currently in a legal battle regarding naming rights. That one has stuck with me.

VinesNRoses: Since a lot of DC shows (i.e Superhero Girls) have companion comics. Would you consider writing a companion comic book to the show? Focusing on the stories between the stories?

Patrick Schumacker: Absolutely would kill to do that. No one’s asked! Stories between the episodes seems like a natural way to go. I like that. Would be cool to get the writers from the staff involved, too. And to follow some of our supporting characters in their own stories. Letting them carry more of the narrative weight.

It's only a small teaser because we don't want to spoil the full interview. I’d like to thank Patrick Schumacker for the interview as well as the producers, writers, cast and crew of the show. I can’t suggest it enough, it’s a surprisingly good show that everyone should definitely check out. It manages to combine the silliness of slapstick comedy, irony, satire and drama to make important points about serious issues, both big and small, personal or global.

“Harley Quinn is an American adult animated television series on the DC Universe service. The series is written and executive produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey and follows the misadventures of Harley Quinn and her best friend and partner, Poison Ivy, after leaving her ex-boyfriend Joker.”
