We all have been wrapped up
with the Harley and Ivy kiss for the past two episodes but let’s talk about
another big issue that the cartoon seems to have fixed in the episode 8: Inner (Para) Demons, which is the removal of
Doctor Psycho. In Comics, Doctor Psycho is
a mentally ill Wonder Woman villain who harbors misogynistic hatred towards
women. The show continues to portray his
misogyny for laughs despite its offensive nature.
At first, I didn’t
understand why writers choose to place Doctor Psycho in Harley’s cartoon. It seem like an odd choice. I’m
not a fan of him. Unlike the very eccentric but lovable characters such as
Frank, King Shark and Clayface, Psycho never struck it big with me. Both Harley and Ivy would never let this
creep in their fold, let alone have him living with them. Some can argue that the writers of the show should have never included him in the first place.
After watching a few episodes, I did find that
Psycho was useful to the team and the storytelling. There needed to be a
character with his powers to go into the minds of Harley and Ivy so that we can
get a look into their deep-seated motivation accounting for their self-sabotaging
behaviors. It was a bit of clever
storytelling to have his character on the show to serve this purpose and then
get rid of him.
It is great that Harley is going down the line, taking out misogynistic members of the Legion of Doom as well as the shows response to a member who was also in her fold. It seems like season 2 has been introducing a host of new characters, especially very strong women like of Catwoman and Batgirl. I’m very excited about the new additions to the show and can’t wait to see more Gotham City Sirens or even Birds of Prey stories being told using them. So I’m happy to say ‘so long Psycho’.
I really hope this series
gets renewed for season 3. There has been an effort on Twitter with the #renewharleyquinn
hashtag where many fans have been voicing their support for the show. I
can’t wait to see what comes next as the
show has cleared the room for both exploring Harley and Ivy’s feelings for each
other as well as paving the way for more female characters.
